Viime kesänä sain hyvältä ystävältäni kutsun hänen häihinsä Etelä-Afrikkaan, Kapkaupunkiin. Jo muutama vuosi aiemmin ystäväni muuttaessa Etelä-Afrikkaan olin luvannut, että kun tuo päivä koittaa, niin olen mukana. Matkan suunnittelussa oli hiukan haasteita ja jossain vaiheessa näytti jo siltä etten voi pitää lupaustani, mutta loppu hyvin kaikki hyvin ja pääsin matkaan muutama päivä ennen häitä!
Last summer I got an invitation to my friend’s wedding in Cape Town, South Africa. Already few years ago when my friend moved to South Africa I promised that when that day comes I will be there. Planning the trip to South Africa faced some difficulties and at some point it looked like I can’t keep my promise, but all ended well and I was on my way to wedding just couple days before.
Häät pidettiin kauniilla paikalla Durban Villessa, Kapkaupungissa. Morsian ja sulhanen olivat halunneet pitää tarkemmat tiedot paikasta salassa ennen häitä, jotta ihmiset eivät nykypäivän teknologian avulla mene etsimään liiemmin tietoa tai kuvia paikasta. Tarkemmat tiedot saimme vasta muutamaa päivää ennen häitä. Mietimme yhdessä silti ennen häitä millaiset häät olisivat ja miten kaksi eri maata näkyisivät niissä. Kaikki arvaukset eivät menneet ehkä ihan nappiin, mutta häät olivat juuri hääparin näköiset enkä olisi koskaan voinut uskoa miten hienoja yksityiskohtia juhliin olikaan keksitty! Häiden teemaksi oli valikoitunut musiikki, joka on hyvin paljon hääparin arjessa mukana. Pukukoodi oli ”smart casual”, joten näissä häissä ei liiemmin nähty pitkiä iltapukuja tai smokkeja. Nämä olisivatkin voineet olla liian kuumia, Afrikan auringon alla, vaikka häät alkoivatkin vasta iltapäivällä.
The wedding was located in a beautiful place in Durban Ville, Cape Town. The bride and the groom wanted to keep the details of the location as a secret before the wedding so people would not go checking the place online with these days technology. The details of the wedding we got only couple days before the wedding. Me and the other guests were sharing our ideas on what type of wedding it would be and how it would incorporate the two cultures. All our ideas did not match with the actual day but the wedding looked exactly like the couple and I would have never guessed how wonderful and detailed things there were. The theme was music which is involved in their daily life a lot. The dress code was smart casual so all the evening dresses or tuxedos were left at home in this wedding. This was a good idea because it would have been too hot under the sun of Africa even though the wedding started at late afternoon.
Hääseremonia pidettiin juhlapaikalla ulkona kauniissa myöhäisiltapäivän auringossa. Itse seremonia oli suomalaiseen verrattuna erittäin rento ja lyhyt. Seremoniaan oli liitetty myös morsiamen isoisän tekemä puhe, jonka pappi luki, sillä isovanhemmat eivät osallistuneet Etelä-Afrikassa järjestettyihin häihin. Seremonian jälkeen ohjelmassa oli alkumaljat ja valokuvausten ottoa sekä rentoa tutustumista vieraiden kesken, joille oli kaikille jaettu rintamerkit, jossa oli vieraan nimi, miten vieras tuntee morsiamen/sulhasen sekä maa, josta vieras on kotoisin. Lisäksi kaikki vieraat saivat ennen seremoniaa perinteisen riisipussin, mutta ei niin perinteisesti aurinkolasit, joita käytettiin muun muassa yhteisissä valokuvissa.
The wedding ceremony was outside under the late afternoon sun. The actual ceremony was shorter and much more relax compared to the Finnish one. In the ceremony the minister also read a speech from the grandfather of the bride because the grand parents did not participate the wedding in South Africa. After the ceremony we all got champagne and it was time to take some photos and get to know the guests. All the guests got buttons which had the guest’s name and the country they were from and also how did the guest know the bride or the groom. Before the ceremony all the guests also got a small rice bag which is typical from Finnish wedding but also not so typically a sun glasses which were used to take group photos.
Ruokailu järjestettiin katetussa tilassa pöytiin tarjoiltuna. Pöytäkoristelussa oli otettu myös mukaan musiikkiteemaa pienillä erilaisilla yksityiskohdilla. Ruokailussa oli myös otettu mukaan molemmat maat, sillä ruokailun alkuun vieraille tarjottiin shotit: suomalaiset saivat amarulaa ja etelä-afrikkalaiset saivat maistaa salmiakkikossua. Pienen gallupin jälkeen sain tulokseksi 50/50 salmiakkikossusta, maku ei ollut kaikkien mieleen, mutta fanejakin löytyi.
The dinner was served to the tables. The table decorations represented the theme of wedding very well with little different details. The two cultures were brought well into the dinner as they served shots before the dinner. Finnish people got Amarula shots and South Africans got Salmiakkikossu shots. After a small survey I found out that some did not like it at all but there were some fans too.
Ruokailun yhteydessä hääparin vanhemmat ja sulhanen pitivät puheita. Ruokailun jälkeen hääparille pidettiin suomalaisen perinteen mukainen leikki, jossa hääpari istuu tuoleilla selät vastakkain ja heille esitetään kysymyksiä, joihin hääparin pitää vastata kumpi heistä tekee enemmän tai vähemmän niin. Leikin jälkeen sulhanen esitti tuoreelle morsiamelleen tekemänsä laulun. Olihan jo aikakin, kun sulhanen on ollut bändissä laulajana jo vuosia ja morsian on jaksanut kiertää keikkoja sulhasen kanssa. Hänen esityksen jälkeen vieraat saivat nauttia tanssimisesta ja keskustelemista bändin soittaessa taustalla. Mielestäni koko ilta oli erittäin rento, hyvin onnistunut ja kaikki nauttivat olostaan.

Wedding couple’s parents and the groom had a speech between eating. After the dinner it was time for some games and the guests could enjoy some traditional Finnish game where the wedding couple sits back against each other’s back and they need to answer to questions about each other. After this game the groom sang his own made song to his new bride. I think it was a perfect idea because the groom has been a singer in a band for years and the bride has been seeing their playing for many gigs. After his show the guests could enjoy the night by dancing and talking while the band was playing in the back. I think after all the wedding was really relaxed and everybody enjoyed their time.
